Raffaele Maietta is a seasoned musician. He played the baritone horn in elementary school but by the summer of 1973, age 12, he decided he wanted to play the saxophone. Jr. High was that fall, and the sax was so much cooler! Self-taught that summer, he played throughout high school and continued in college.
Raf earned a BFA in Music Education from LIU Post in 1983. While there, he performed in various ensembles and co-founded a saxophone quartet in 1981 with his childhood friend Robert. Following graduation, he taught instrumental music in the Half Hollow Hills School District and instructed private students on sax and piano.
After a 32 year musical hiatus during his career as a sworn officer in the Suffolk County Police Department, he returned to playing upon retiring in 2021. In 2022, once again with Robert, they formed Soli4Sax, a quartet whose name pays homage to a 1985 performance back at LIU they titled Soli Four Sax! Raf is thrilled to be actively playing again and performing alongside Robert, Chris, and Dan.
